Spiral Galaxy - Abre Ojos

"The Spiral Galaxy project has been constructed using the images of Marek Dobiecki artist, teacher and astronomer. Dobiecki has built himself an observatory in his backyard in the Dandenong ranges where he tracks the night sky with his computer controlled f4.5 x 30cm Newtonian Telescope capturing galaxies, nebulae and star fields. The photographs are wonderfully fragile, textured, grayscale images of up to 2 hours exposure time revealing things we can barely see with the naked eye.

These photos were built into a series of audio reactive Quartz Composer animations and the sounds are inspired from space recordings and low frequency atmospheric sounds of the earth built on a eurorack modular synthesizer. The tracks are all recorded in one pass with no overdubs for sound or vision. The project is now completed and is sealed with the DVD release of Spiral Galaxy. The DVD has 3 tracks giving just over 66 minutes of sound and vision. The three tracks are:

* NGC1313 Spiral Galaxy in Reticulum
* NGC2835 Spiral Galaxy in Hydra
* NGC1313 Live at Electundra Festival 2009

Hydra and Reticulum are new videos while the live video was recorded back in November of last year at the Electundra Festival at Loop Bar. The DVD gives you all three tracks in full screen 16:9 DVD quality with full uncompressed audio to let the entire frequency range loose. As usual if you pop the DVD in your computer you’ll find 320khz MP3 versions of all the tracks for your fav audio device.

The DVD is a hand numbered limited edition of 50.

Predictably it has to be my euro rack modular, two years ago I would have said the DSI Evolver, but the modular has eclipsed that. Patching is akin to playing chess, or raking a sand garden, it’s a blank slate with a kazillion options and if you manage to explore every option just swap out a module with another one and suddenly you are back to option 1 with a kazillion to go, oh and it sounds good too. The resurgence of modular synthesis has to be an indicator that humanity is getting better."

Elements are a series of improvised audio-visual tracks based around the four alchemical elements of Earth, Air, Water & Fire. Drawing on the aesthetics of the Crowley Tarot painted by Lady Frieda Harris with imagery drawn from 50’s propaganda films these pieces combine long evolving drones from modular synths with sound reactive looping visuals and animated mandalas to create an immersive synaesthetic experience to give time for reflection and meditation.

Each week, for four weeks, a new element track will be released culminating in the fourth week with a limited edition DVD compiling all four tracks as well as an extra bonus fifth track, Spirit, which will only be available on the DVD. "I have a new track up this one will be the last for a while as i'm working on a 4 track AV release for http://darkwinter.com which should be done by about march (fingers crossed).

this track features a couple of new modules including the excellent EXCELLENT Flight of Harmony Plague Bearer and a DIY Korg P3100 resonator clone built from a PCB from the workshop of Fonik which is full of vactrol goodness!
